SPECIFIC, along with Tata Steel in the UK, had a unique opportunity to showcase our perovskite photovoltaic technology at an exhibition marking Founder’s Day in Jamshedpur, India.
Every year on March 3rd Tata Steel celebrates the birth of group founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. Born in 1839, he was the visionary who laid the foundation for India’s steel industry; he is also remembered for his remarkable philanthropic efforts, which helped to introduce new and experimental technology, create policies for worker welfare, and set the foundation for scientific education in India.
The twelve-module perovskite solar array was screen-printed at SPECIFIC’s pilot manufacturing line in Baglan and shipped to Jamshedpur, where it was connected up by Indian colleagues with guidance from SPECIFIC’s staff. The array was used to power a range of equipment including a fan, illustrating its potential in the Indian sunshine.
Professor Trystan Watson, who leads SPECIFIC’s PV team, recognised the achievements of our staff:
“Hats off to SPECIFIC’s team, who worked hard to overcome a number of challenges to print the perovskite modules and get them safely to India. We’re delighted that the exhibit was so well received.
This emerging technology is low cost, light, and easy to manufacture by printing directly onto a range of materials. It offers a tantalising route to manufacturing solar powered roofing products at significant scale. We look forward to working with Tata Steel in the UK and internationally to develop this further.”

“On the occasion of 3rd March Founders Day, like every year, an Exhibition to celebrate the best of Achievements, Innovative Products and Solutions was held in Steelinium Hall, at Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur site.
The exhibit was attended by the Chairman of Tata Sons, Mr. N. Chandrasekaran; CEO & MD of Tata Steel, T. V. Narendran; and VP Tech & New Materials Business for Tata Steel, Dr. D. Bhattacharjee, amongst other senior dignitaries.
The lighting of the panel is a landmark in itself and is the first perovskite panel at a demo level to be shown in India.
The feedback was positive and encouraging and Tata Steel and the SPECIFIC team will work collaboratively to take the perovskite technology forward.”
