Active Homes Neath
SPECIFIC worked with Pobl Group and Neath Port Talbot Council on a development of sixteen innovative new-build homes for social housing tenants.
The Clos y Wawr development was funded by the Welsh Government’s Innovative Housing Programme (IHP) and Social Housing Grant (SHG). They were monitored for the first 12 months as part of the BEIS ‘Building For 2050’ project.
Renewable technology and energy efficient materials were integrated into the homes in order to actively reduce the impact of carbon emissions and fuel poverty. The homes have no gas supply – for water and space heating they use Tata Steel’s Colorcoat Renew SC® in combination with Ariston’s air source heat pump. They generate electricity via a solar integrated roof from BIPVco and store excess energy in Tesla Powerwall batteries to be used later in the day. When there is less sun the batteries can be charged overnight, which is cheaper than charging during the day.
